Economic crisis in figures
In light of the global financial crisis this month's topic presents short-term statistical indicators which help to gauge the current
economic situation.
The monthly and quarterly data show first signs of the decline in virtually all EU Member States. For instance, the gross domestic product of the EU as a whole (EU-27) has been decreasing from quarter to quarter since the 2nd quarter of 2008 and dropped by a a total of 1.5% in Q4/2008 compared to Q3/2008. In December 2008, the industrial new order index for the EU as a whole (EU-27) was almost 24% below the level for December 2007.
The index of industrial prioduction decreased by 12% in the EU over the same time period. The increase in unemployment rates also seems to indicate that the crisis is also starting to affect the labour market. The unemployment rate of 15 to 24-year-olds has risen from 14.7% in January 2008 to 17.0% in January 2009 in the EU.
These figures and many more can be found in the tables and graphs presented below.
