Topic Highlights: Travel season in Europe

In 2004 most of the holiday trips in the EU25 were domestic trips. But this was not the case in all EU member countries. In Germany approximately two-thirds of all trips were spent abroad - mostly in neighbouring EU countries. Each EU-tourist undertook an average 2.1 holiday trips in 2004, private cars being the most popular means of transport. Italy offered more than 1 million hotel bedrooms in 2005, whereas Spain archieved the highest revenue from tourism in the EU25 (38.5 million Euro). Anyone interested in planning a cost-efficient holiday trip abroad, is well advised to choose a destination such as Egypt or Thailand. In both countries, the purchasing power of the Euro calculated on the basis of the living costs in Germany is comparatively high (for example in Cairo: 1.56 or in Bangkok: 1.25).
